Homesteader's guns S1 episode 5 - Hard times
In this episode of Homesteader's guns series we came up with quite a surprising combination of arms as we try to solve some increasingly worrying problems.
Maverick 88 All Purpose 20ga, 22" barrel. This time, an affordable shotgun that shoots 20 gauge shells. Details here.
Explorer 400XP crossbow. I bet you didn't expected this! Is time to get proficient with the crossbows and bows. Details here.
Taurus 692 .357/.38 Spl. and 9mm revolver. It is a beautiful revolver already presented on this blog, a trusty multi-caliber solution. Details here.
There are a number of problems we are trying to solve (some ahead of time):
The shotgun now uses a more powerful (and cheaper) ammunition than the .410 bore shell and more available. This can still be used by a well trained boy of 10 years age - yes, it also depends on the type of ammo. Again, if you already have the Rossi Tuffy single shot shotgun, don't sell it, pass it to your children.
The crossbow. It is a powerful, silent weapon that can use arrows made by you so here you will never have a problem. It will put food on the table without alarming the small an medium game on all the states around your property. And it won't reveal your location if danger lurks on your forests. But definitely needs a lot of training. Do that with arrows made by you and stock the commercial arrows for hard times. It will educate you to be silent, patient and deadly.
The revolver comes with 3 calibers, one of them accessible to all the family members. All centerfire ammo, no failures, 7 rounds. Train yourself to get them all on target.
The solution is not cheap, but even if it tries to save some money on the shotgun, it does without compromises regarding reliability.

Reasons
There are a number of problems we are trying to solve (some ahead of time):
- As usual, at least one of the proposed guns must be easily used by any member of family, but you already know this;
- The cost and availability of ammunition;
- The increasing danger - Prager University has a terrifying video here;
- The probability of gun laws to be changed - the main reason I continue to avoid proposing semi and auto rifles.
