Maverick 88 All Purpose, 20 gauge, 22" barrel
For the budget version of Mossberg, the Maverick 88 is an incredibly reliable shotgun. A shotgun that can be serviced (for the most part) with components from the 500 series. The one that I prefer is the 20 gauge shell variant but unfortunately, there is no "Security" option. The smallest barrel for 20ga is of 22" length and that means a little too long for home defense. Maverick 88 comes with a youth stock and acquiring the target is kinda difficult for adults. The shell capacity (5 + 1) is reasonable.
Anyway, Maverick 88 is a viable cheap option and is a solid base for an upgrade project.
